Friborg is a bilingual city, almost a fifth of the population is German-speaking. It is located on either side of the Sarine on the Swiss plateau at the cultural border between German and French-speaking Switzerland. It is an important economic, administrative and educational center and includes a university.

The public transport network is operated by Friborg Public Transport (TPF); it consists of eleven bus lines. Three lines are partially electrified and are operated by two-mode trolleybus, that is to say, can also run on diesel, the others are operated by buses with the exception of line 100 which is operated by an automated shuttle . The network is centered around the station and also serves the neighboring towns of Marly, Villars-sur-Glâne, Givisiez, Granges-Paccot, Corminboeuf, Chesopelloz, Avry-sur-Matran, Matran and Rosé.

Friborg is located on one of the main railway lines in Switzerland, the Plateau line which connects Geneva to St. Gallen via Lausanne, Berne, Olten and Zurich. Freiburg station is served every hour by an InterCity SBB Geneva-Airport - St. Gallen and an InterRegio SBB Geneva-Airport - Lucerne.

The network is completed by a funicular connecting the upper town (Place Georges-Python) to the lower town (Place du Pertuis). Unique feature in Europe, it works since 1899 thanks to the sewage of the city.
