For the little story
This house was the residence of the major, officer of the Chapter of Sion. The substructures of this building still remain; they support a building rebuilt around 1910. During the 19th century, the painter R. Ritz fixed its appearance, after its restoration carried out in 1786 by Major Barthélemy Favre. This building then looked like a 15th century fortified house, with three floors on the ground floor and stepped gables; on the south facade ran a wooden gallery connected to the eaves. Today one still notices, on the ground floor and in the south, the entry in beautiful apparatus, of which the lintel, surmounted by an IHS, carries in Gothic letters the date of May 18, 1564; it opens onto the spiral staircase which has not been demolished while the rest of the house has been almost entirely transformed. The major exercised an official function. He was to, by a solemn act, take an oath in the hands of the vidomne or another canon "with the mouth and the hand", promising to respect the rights of the Lord and to promote his interests with care.
His role was important and varied since he collected funds and royalties at the Cathedral, supervised the municipal administration which he directed with the trustees, maintained order, intervening as defender of the person and of property. In the absence of the fall, he replaced him in the plaid, in the inspection of weights and measures, received complaints, accepted pledges or sureties, exercised justice, carried out seizures, police. In return, he took advantage of the Pralong meadow and enjoyed the Alpe de Méribé, in the Val d'Hérémence.
