Welcome to Oensingen

Oensingen is a municipality in the district of Gäu in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland.

geography
Oensingen has 6884 inhabitants (as of 12.2022) and is located in the Mittelland at the foot of the Jura. The Jura slopes make up about 40% of the municipal area (1211 ha) and are very heavily forested. The highest point is the Wannenfluh at 1033 m above sea level. M., other prominent points are the Roggenfluh with 995 m above sea level. M., the Lehnfluh and the Ravelle. With an area of around 12 km², Oensingen is the largest municipality in the Gäu district.
Oensingen is considered a prime example of urban sprawl in the Mittelland. The place, whose original village center is in the lower village, initially moved to the railway station further west. In contrast to traditional industrial regions, the new industry was not located near the village center, but in the direction of the neighboring town of Niederbipp. This in turn created a large industrial zone, which is why Oensingen and Niederbipp have grown together today.

Traffic
In 1876, the Swiss Central Railway opened the Gäu Railway from Olten to Solothurn. The route is now part of the SBB's Jura southern footer line. In 1899, the Oensingen-Balsthal-Bahn (OeBB) began operating on the railway line to Balsthal. From 1907 to 1943, the meter-gauge Langenthal-Jura railway also ran to Oensingen. Today, the Oensingen train station is served by mobile trains from the SBB, the OeBB and the Aare Seeland.
The A1 motorway connection is in the village. Solothurn and Olten are less than 25km away. To get to Bern, Basel or Biel it is about 50km.

School
The communities of Oensingen and Kestenholz form the Zweckverband Kreisschule Bechburg. The additional school offer offers many extras such as: music school, lunch, various electives, school social work, voluntary school sports and much more.
