Savièse is mentioned in writing for the first time in 999, during the deed of donation of the county of Valais by Rudolph III, king of Burgundy, to his vassal Hugues de Sion. The German name Safiesch was also used. According to one hypothesis, the name Savièse, in Chavyeje patois, comes from two words: cat (seven) and veouadzé (villages). Thus, Savièse would literally mean seven villages, which would correspond to the communal configuration of the time (made up of the banners of Saint-Germain, Drône, Granois, Chandolin, Roumaz-Ormône, Neinda-Zuchuat and Malerne).
