Location
Marly is a locality and a Swiss municipality in the canton of Fribourg, located in the Sarine district.
Marly is located 4 km (as the crow flies) south of the city of Fribourg and at an altitude of 627 m. The municipality stretches along the Gérine valley to its confluence with the Sarine, as well as on the adjacent molasse of the Fribourg plateau. The territory of Marly covers 7.7 km.
Bus line n° 8 connects the eco-district to Fribourg and even continues to Corminboeuf. There is a 15-minute frequency.
The central part of the territory is occupied by the Gérine valley, up to 800 m wide, which flows from east to west. The course of the river is engaged in a canal which protects the valley floor, which was once often flooded. Downstream, the Gérine flows through a narrow gorge formed by the La Grangette plateau and Marly-le-Petit, before emptying into the Sarine.
To the south of the Gérine valley, the commune's territory extends towards the adjoining forest heights: Bois de l'Église, Vers le Bois (with an altitude of 730 m, the highest point in Marly) and Bois de Monteynan (704 m altitude). These woods are crossed by small streams such as the Ruisseau de Copy. To the north, a high plateau about 1 km wide joins the bottom of the Gérine valley. This plateau drops through multiple meanders of the Sarine's course through the molasse strata. The difference in elevation of the slope reaches 100 m in some places and is crisscrossed by sandstone rocks. The western and northern borders of the commune run along the Sarine.
